Field Map

This interactive map covers the fifty oil fields located in Kern County. Large oil drilling and refining corporations have taken over the county’s land from North to South and East to West. Kern is home to Midway-Sunset Oil Field, the largest in California (spreading across 30 square miles), and several other oil fields are not too far behind.

The usurpation of Kern County’s land by these oil companies has forced locals to build their homes and live their lives around oil refineries. The cityscape of Bakersfield and its suburbs is littered with oil derricks, wells, and rigs. While this cityscape is uncommon for outsiders, it is considered “scenery” in Kern County.
